Can Crunches Really Trigger Spontaneous Orgasms?
Most of the time the best part of a workout is when it’s over. You suffer through the burn to feel good afterwards. It’s a means to an end. Sure, it feels good to move and stretch your body, and some workouts are legitimately entertaining. But what if I told you there was a way to combine the burn of strength training with actual orgasmic pleasure?
It’s called exercise-induced orgasm (EIO), and it’s something researchers have known about since the 1950s. The phenomenon is also referred to as a “coregasm,” since it typically happens during abdominal exercises. About 10% of women have experienced at least one, and 40% of that group have been able to make it happen over ten times.
Researchers don’t know if women can condition themselves to experience an EIO, but Dr. Debby Herbenick, co-director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion in IU's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, suspects many of us can. In another study by Debby Herbenick, 51.4% of women reported having an EIO during abdominal exercise, but there are other ways to make it happen. 26.5% achieved EIO during weight lifting, 20% during yoga, 15.8% while biking, 13.2% while running, and 9.6% while walking or hiking.
The sensation isn’t inherently sexual in nature, although it feels like a slightly less intense, less tingley vaginal orgasm. It isn’t enhanced by sexual thoughts, and seemingly happens out of the blue without any arousal at all. It’s simply a little treat that makes your workout a little (or a lot) more enjoyable.
Since abdominal exercises are the most common cause of EIO, Pilates is a great workout to test your abilities with! Happy coregasming!
